The rise of tyrrany in America

Filed under: News, Politics, Opinion - Jason @ 4:24 pm

It grows apparent day by day that this government is slowly but surely becoming more tyrranical, more fascistic.  The PATRIOT Act, illegal detention of people, secret prison camps, warrentless wiretapping, etc.  Now add another to the ever growing list.  Its been revealed today that the NSA is spying on a number of news agencies, including NYT, ABC, and the Washington Post.  Why?  Primarily to try and find out the names of confidential informats.

I could come up with a long winded post about how this is destroying what is/was a great nation.  But, I think I’ll just quote Huey Long instead:

"When fascism comes to America, it will come wrapped in an American flag"

Fascism disguised as patriotism, a truly frightening creature.

US to reestablish ties with Libya, remove it from terrorism list

Filed under: News - Jason @ 1:21 pm

From Yahoo/AP.

The Bush administration said Monday it is restoring normal diplomatic relations with Libya for the first time in over a quarter century after removing Moammar Gadhafi’s regime from a list of state sponsors of terrorism.

"We are taking these actions in recognition of Libya’s continued commitment to its renunciation of terrorism," Secretary of State
Condoleezza Rice said in a statement. She said Tripoli’s cooperation in combating international terrorism has been "excellent."

Interesting turn of events, but understandable, I suppose.  Libya has been working towards reestablishing good relations with the west.

Karl Rove indicted?

Filed under: News - Jason @ 9:16 am

According to Truthout.org, he has.

Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald spent more than half a day Friday at the offices of Patton Boggs, the law firm representing Karl Rove.

During the course of that meeting, Fitzgerald served attorneys for former Deputy White House Chief of Staff Karl Rove with an indictment charging the embattled White House official with perjury and lying to investigators related to his role in the CIA leak case, and instructed one of the attorneys to tell Rove that he has 24 business hours to get his affairs in order, high level sources with direct knowledge of the meeting said Saturday morning.

Of course, until this gets verified by another news source, take this info with a grain of salt.  If he really did get indicted, then WOOHOO!  The Justice system actually works!  Of course, you know Bush would more than likely issue a Presidential Pardon for his turd blossom.

Net Neutrality: Save the Internets

Filed under: News, Opinion - Jason @ 6:50 am

I’ve kept forgetting to post about this.  Anyways, for those who do not know, the freedom of the internet is under attack by telecommunication companies and Congress.  There is currently a bill up for vote, the Communications Opportunity, Promotion and Enhancement Act (COPE).  If approved, the law will in essence, give control over the net to the telecom companies (AT&T and such).  They will be able to decide if people will be able to access websites, depending on their own preference.  This means that AT&T, for example, could restrict access to a rival phone company’s website.

How can you help?  First, by going to savetheinternet.com and signing the petition.  Second, by contacting your Congressman by phone, fax or email and letting them know how you feel on the issue.  Implore them not to support COPE.  Make it clear to them that voting for it would cost them your vote and possibly the vote of your friends and family.

The scary thing?  This bill actually has a good chance of passing.  So yes, this is not just some random minor thing.  Republicans and even some Democrats are in support of them abomination.  That’s exactly what COPE is, an abomination.  It represents the oppression of free thought, communication, and freedom on a whole.  I implore everyone to get involved.  The government and big business must be stopped now, before they decide to take it further.  How long until they start restricting who/when we can call, what we can watch and listen to, what we can read and even think?  Our very freedoms are at stake.
